Q:My name is Vera, I'm from Russia. I'm planning to give birth to my child in the United States approximately 15-20 November 2017 (I am now 23 weeks pregnant). We would like to receive information about the organization of childbirth in the United States: affordable health care (hospitals, doctors), pricing, organization of stay in the U.S. before and after giving birth, the paperwork for the child. In particular, we are interested in the question of whether I, as a non-citizen of the United States, residing in the country on a tourist visa can have medical insurance coverage that covers the costs of pregnancy and with its help give birth in the United States? Could you help us and send information about our questions or to recommend to whom can we turn?

A:
Unfortunately, there is no insurance for an international visitor which covers pregnancy. You have to pay from your pocket.

Q:We are a family of four (husband, wife, and two children < 10 years). We arrive on an E2 treaty visa (non-resident alien) which is applicable to the three of us, except my son who is a US citizen. Our plan was to opt for insurance that covers us from 3rd August 2017 (we arrive in the US on 2nd August) till 31st January 2018. This is because there are no enrollment windows for regular insurance open at the moment, by 1st Feb we should have access to employer insurance from my business in the US. We will have a legal address for Maryland and for Pennsylvania.

A:
When you arrive into the United States with your visa type that would essentially qualify you for a special enrollment period upon your arrival that allow for you to enroll into a domestic insurance plan within 60 days of your life changing event which would be your arrival into the United States. There is a plan called International Major Medical that you can purchase for coverage if you are using an address outside of Maryland. This plan is available only until you are eligible to enroll into a domestic insurance plan, you will still be responsible for any penalties that may be assessed for not having a complaint plan. If you need any additional assistance please feel free to reach out to our office.
