Q:I've some doubts about the International Student Medical Insurance I want to buy from you guys. I'm going to study in January to the US, to UCLA and I want to know if that insurance covers what the University ask me for. I will have an student visa F-1. What they need is this: Must be a medical/health insurance plan purchased in the U.S. with a U.S.-owned insurance company that is headquartered and operating in the U.S. It must not be foreign insurance with U.S. affiliates/representatives, travel insurance, or reimbursement programs of any kind. These are not acceptable. This includes reimbursement arrangements of vouchers from home governments or their U.S. based consulates. A policy showing your full name and the coverage dates and a list of the health insurance company's preferred provider network of local hospitals. Is there any insurance plan that covers this requirements?

A:
Thank you for contacting Insubuy for your insurance needs. The plans we offer in our International Student Insurance section will meet the requirements. We would recommend the ExchangeGuard plan OR Patriot Exchange Program If after you purchase your school doesn't approve the insurance then you can cancel prior to the effective date of the plan and receive a full refund. If you need additional assistance please feel free to contact our office.

Q:When I fill in that I am a citizen of the Netherlands, with home country US and CA as my state of residence, I get a number of possibilities for travel insurances. One of them is Patriot International. However, when I look at the Certificate Wording of that insurance, it is stated in section D on page 9 that regarding eligibility: "In order to be eligible and qualified for coverage under this insurance, this person must ..... (8) not be a citizen or have a permanent residence in the Host country."

A:
Based on Patriot International's certificate wording this plan would provide coverage to you anywhere outside of your home country (U.S.) with the exception of the country of citizenship. In order for the plan to provide coverage in the Netherlands, the citizenship return rider must be included. We would recommend a plan like the Atlas International which will base their eligibility on the home country definition. This plan defines the home country as the country where you principally reside, and receive your regular mail (page 25 of the certificate wording).

In your brochure on coverage, under "Doctor Visits, X-rays, Prescriptions, Ambulance," the coverage is listed as "Usual customary charge to the selected Medical Maximum." What exactly is the cost then for a general doctor's check-up?

A:
The Safe Travels USA Comprehensive plan does cover the usual customary charge to the selected medical maximum. We do not have information on what a doctor in your are would charge for this event. You would have to reach out to the providers to see what the general cost are for this event.

Q:Please read this and answer, I would like to know if below would be an example of acute onset of pre-existing condition. My mother has diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure which are all very well under control with lifestyle changes and medications. She has never had any complications related to any of these and her tests are all normal. As such we do not expect any complications from these conditions as she goes for constant tests and checkups and everything comes normal. She gets all her medications from India and we are not looking for coverage for those. What I am looking for is coverage of any unexpected acute (life threatening) onset related to any of the conditions above such as heart attack or stroke. Would this type of life threatening onset be fully covered under "Acute onset of pre-existing conditions coverage to policy max for Age < 70" if it were to occur? Please respond to this.

A:
For specific examples of acute onset of a pre-existing condition please refer to Acute Onset FAQ. It explains a great deal of information about what coverage is offered with the acute onset coverage. Most comprehensive plans will offer coverage for the acute onset of a pre-existing condition. As everyone conditions would be different it is not possible for anyone to provide you with a definitive "yes or no" as it relates to covering this specific scenario. It is a possible that a heart attack or stroke could be covered under the acute onset coverage based upon the attending physicians notes and the certificate wording at the time of the claim. Typically, in network providers will bill directly to the insured for covered expenses. If you have any additional questions please contact our office.

Q:I want to purchase some medical insurance for my daughter form Nov 7-15 - she is Canadian but is coming form Norway to the US and then back home to Canada. I tried to purchase a policy for $2.0M with $100 deductible but they kicked me out because I wasn't in the US presently. Can you help me please so she is covered for her spell in the US next month.

A:
If you adjust the policy max you will have more plans to choose from and you will find plans that you can purchase now. Because you put a $2 mil policy max only a couple of plans come up and the Atlas America plan has a Geographic restriction for Canada. If you need additional assistance please feel free to contact our office.
